AS OF JULY 10th... Over half way through the year and still no call up to the England squad or a request to sing backing vocals on the next Elvis Costello album, but aside from that things are going pretty well... I'm almost two thirds of the way through the next Tom Thorne novel and trying to fit the writing in between filming days on a documentary series I'm presenting called "Partners In Crime" about couples who kill. All very disturbing, but it IS providing a little inspiration as far as the writing goes. As mentioned in the latest newsletter (now available to view on your left), it has also led to some rather worrying mail... On the subject of which, I recently received an email from a disgruntled reader who so disliked one of my books that he "promoted it to the garbage". How bad does something have to be before it is "promoted" to garbage?? It's odd how those that dislike the books seem to enjoy telling me exactly what they did to them afterwards. Thankfully however, all but a small minority of the mails I receive are positive, so thanks if you've been in touch and for not promoting any of my books to anywhere unsavoury. I'm still hugely excited about the publication of In The Dark - my first standalone thriller - which, as things stand, is due to be published in the UK on August 7th, with publication in the US coming in October. I really hope readers will enjoy it. I've just about finished work on the second in the trilogy of books I'm writing for children. The first - Triskellion - was published in February, co-written with my friend Peter Cocks under the pseudonym Will Peterson. We have really enjoyed doing events in schools to support the books and there are still plenty more to come. The rest of the year promises to be pretty busy, with plenty of events to promote In The Dark, including a bunch with the wonderful Peter Robinson and a few nice festival appearances already in the diary. There will also be trips to Canada, Australia and the US, including Bouchercon in Baltimore, where I'm honoured to have been chosen as toastmaster. Closer to home, I am, as ever, particularly looking forward to the Harrogate Crime Writer's Festival. The Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel Of The Year award will once again be presented on the first night of the festival and I'm delighted that Buried has been short-listed. Thank you to all those who took the trouble to vote online or in branches of Waterstones. If I get the call from Fabio or Elvis, I'll be sure to let you know, and meanwhile I hope to see some of you somewhere in 2008. Wherever I show up to show off, please come along and feel free to say hi/heckle/storm off in disgrace. Mark |
